Cameron Jeffers paid tribute to one of his mentors, Russell Richardson, after picking up five wickets for the first time in England last weekend.

The Bermudian leg spinner, who plays for West of England Premier Cricket League outfit Marshfield Cricket Club, claimed five for 43 to lead his team’s attack in a 160-run home win over Swindon Cricket Club on Saturday.

But after completing the game he was quick to praise Richardson, a former Bermuda team manager, who died last week.

“I had extra motivation hearing the news about manager Russell Richardson, who was a big part of my career and life in general,” Jeffers said.

“I got the news he had passed, which was unfortunate because he was coming to my wedding. He met my fiancée and has been brilliant throughout everything, and that gave me that extra motivation to do something really big and do it for him.

“That was really big in my mind and definitely an emotional roller-coaster, but it's something that in the end made the difference in terms of what I was able to produce on the day and find that little bit extra.”

Jeffers is making a big impact with his new side and was pleased with his milestone.

“I am really happy to get the monkey off my back and it was a really nice feeling to knuckle down and get five for the boys,” Jeffers said.

“The scoreboard was creeping in their favour and then a few quick wickets started a mini collapse and swung it back in our favour.

“I feel I have a knack for breaking partnerships. That's been my role and I took that role on with open arms and did the work to get us back into a position of control.”

Jeffers, who has claimed nine wickets so far this season, was brought into the attack as fourth change and exploited the conditions on offer.

“I feel honoured to perform and take the opportunity to impact the game,” he added. “The wicket started to deteriorate quickly so I always knew it was going to spin.

“First wicket came in the first over and, with the wicket spinning and being slow, I made a real effort to vary my pace and get the ball to not spin so to play mind tricks on the batters.

“I got guys trying to hit out and that really played in my favour because I was able to manipulate my length and pace and spinning the ball both ways helped me get on top.”

Led by fifties from opening batters Calum Burnstone (98) and Max Bradley (60), Marshfield posted 348 for eight after electing to bat and then dismissed their opponents for 188 in 42 overs, with Jeffers leading the charge to get their title bid back on track.

“We were unbeaten and slipped up and lost last week, so I think the boys really wanted to make a point of winning and winning big,” Jeffers said.

“It’s really important we got across the line. We are on the charge for promotion so doing this to teams and winning big shows we mean business.”
