Devonshire Rec’s bid for promotion received a boost after they recorded a comfortable 113-run win against Warwick at Southampton Oval yesterday.

The visitors received good contributions throughout their order on the way to posting 238 all out in 42.2 overs after electing to take first strike at the crease and then dismissing their First Division 50 overs opponents for 125 in 27.3 overs.

Drewonde Bascome topped Devonshire’s batting with an aggressive 40 from 36 balls, fellow opener Ankoma Cannonier hit 20 from 22 balls while Ajai Daniels (37), Shaquille Pitcher (26) and Trey Tucker (22) were also among those in double figures.

Warwick captain Staphen Dill (three for 36) and Jamie MacFarlane (three for 56) claimed six wickets between them while Malachi Jones (two for 39) and Luke Horan (two for 43) also chipped in.

The home side were in early trouble at 45 for four and never recovered as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

George O’Brien Jr led the Devonshire attack with three for 41 and received solid support from the trio of Pitcher (two for 17), Jahzardae Samuels (two for 24) and Bascome (two for 23), who took two each.

Horan topped the Warwick batting with 31 while Robert Richardson chipped in with 22 lower down the order.

“Good performances from the openers, who got us off to a good start by putting on 71 for the first wicket dominated by Drewonde Bascome,” Devonshire manager Dennis Williams said.

“In the bowling, Shaquille struck in the first over and new ball partner Jahzardae clean bowled Malachi Jones in his first over. Devonshire never looked back from that excellent start.”

Also emerging victorious was Flatts, who beat struggling Southampton Rangers by five wickets at PHC Field on Sunday.

Keegan Jones (three for 45) and Sai Kumar (three for 14) bagged six wickets between them as Flatts dismissed Southampton for 149 in 36.5 overs after sending them into bat.

Jermaine Clarke then led the chase with 56 from 77 balls, fellow opener Jan-Johan Nel added 31, while Jones (18) and Reggie Baker (13) both made starts as Flatts reached 154 for five in 36.4 overs to get back to winning ways.

The remaining First Division encounter featured Bermuda Under-19 beating Somerset Bridge by seven wickets at PHC Field on Saturday.

Captain Jermal Proctor led by example with a brilliant all-round display, first claiming three for 33 from 9.5 overs, which included a maiden, as Bridge were dismissed for 240 in 49.5 overs after electing to bat.

Proctor then led the chase with a fluent 75 from 66 balls, which contained 13 boundaries, as Bermuda Under-19 replied with 241 for three in 31.3 overs to secure their third successive victory.

The promising player featured in two half-century partnerships which laid a solid foundation for Bermuda Under-19, putting on 56 for the first wicket with fellow opener JJ Nel (27) and a further 68 for the third with Zakao Hart, who hammered eight boundaries in an unbeaten knock of 68 from 66 balls.

Hart and Dominic Sabir (49) added 89 runs for the third wicket to keep Bermuda Under-19 on track after Proctor was dismissed.

Sabir eventually fell one run shy of his fifty, leaving Hart and Luke Horan (12) to finish the job with a 28-run fourth-wicket stand.

Aiding Proctor in the Bermuda Under-19 attack were new ball partner Shaquille Pitcher (two for 21) and fifth-change Keanu Coddington (two for 22), who bagged four wickets between them.

Team coach Janeiro Tucker is happy with the result but stressed the need for further improvement in the field.

“It’s three wins but still a lot of work to be done with these young men,” he said.

“Proctor and Zakao are batting really well and doing the things that I ask of them, but our fielding and bowling need to improve a lot more if we are to cut down on chasing or giving away high scores. But all in all they are getting a little better weekly.”

Jason Smith (77) and Adrian Burrows (68) led the Bridge batting, while Donnie Charles (one for 46), Callum McIntosh (one for 62) and Shawn Riley (one for 41) accounted for the Bermuda Under-19 wickets to fall.
