Wellington Oval (Somerset won toss): Cleveland beat Somerset by 68 runs

Steven Bremar Jr smashed a century as Cleveland County beat rivals Somerset in a high-scoring Premier Division 50 overs match on Sunday.

Coming in at three, the wicketkeeper lashed nine fours and seven sixes during a swashbuckling knock of 101 from 89 balls.

Bremar reached the century in style with a six off Azar Morrissey with the last ball of the 37th over before being dismissed by the same bowler shortly after.

The experienced player featured in a 132-run second-wicket partnership with Dion Stovell, who thumped eleven fours and two sixes in his knock of 78 from 90 balls as Cleveland posted a daunting 305 all out in 49.4 overs after being sent into bat.

Captain Mackih McGowan (26), Jabari Darrell (23), Isaiah Greaves (23) and Kioshi Trott (17) all chipped in with useful contributions lower down the order.

Jermal Proctor (three for 45), Greg Maybury Jr (three for 43) and Morrissey (three for 46) were Somerset’s chief wicket takers.

Somerset made a fist of it in reply but came up short after being dismissed for 237 in 41.1 overs.

Second-change Allan Douglas Jr led the Cleveland attack with three for 45 while Stovell (two for 27), Treadwell Gibbons Jr (two for 47) and McGowan (two for 18) shared six wickets between them.

Dominic Sabir topped the Somerset batting with 58 from 52 balls, which included five fours and three sixes.

Opener Proctor was next best for the visiting side, belting five boundaries in a brisk innings of 51.

Isaiah Richardson chipped in with 43 from 48 balls, while captain Alje Richardson (20) and Morrissey (26) were the other batters making starts for the visitors who suffered their second straight loss in as many weeks at Wellington Oval.

Cleveland coach Clevie Wade was delighted to see the home side get back to winning ways after they suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Eastern Counties rivals St David’s in their previous outing.

“We got the win and look to go on from here,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“We’ll look to go from strength to strength, get a few wins under our belt, and move on up the table.”

The former St George’s Cup Match captain and Bermuda all-rounder was pleased with his team’s batting display, singling out the fruitful century partnership between Bremar and Stovell.

“They Somerset won the toss sent us in and we had some outstanding batting from wicketkeeper Bremar and Dion,” he added.

“They had over a hundred-run partnership. We lost an early wicket in the power play but those two really put their heads down, batted and gave us a partnership, which I have been looking for the last few games.

“Basically that was a big partnership which really took us to 305 and a couple of guys lower down the order chipped in.

“We bowled in spurts and there’s a lot of work to improve on, especially in the power play. We are giving up too many runs in the power play.

Cleveland assistant coach Courtney Trott was also pleased with the positive outcome.

‘“It was a good day down here,” he said.

“It was a well-played game and Bremar was the standout man.

“It was a much needed victory to help propel us and get us moving again in the season, and it takes us to two wins and two losses.”
