Cricket season thrown into chaos after teams fail to turn up for rescheduled games
The domestic cricket season was thrown into chaos on Saturday with only two of the scheduled six 50 overs matches taking place.
In the Premier Division, the fixture between Bailey’s Bay and Cleveland County did not take place when Cleveland failed to turn up, while Willow Cuts did not have the strength in numbers to field a side against Western Stars.
It was a similar story in the First Division, with the game between Devonshire Rec and Somerset Bridge not being played and the match between Flatts and Bermuda Under-19 also cancelled.
The Bermuda Cricket Board had been forced to make late revisions to its season schedule after clubs protested furiously at the decision to play just one round of matches in the 50 Overs competition.
As a result of those protests, the BCB agreed to reinstate a second round of matches but was unwilling to shorten the T20 season in order to accommodate those games, instead preferring to make teams play double headers on a weekend, with fixtures taking place on Saturdays and Sundays.
This weekend was set to be the first of those double headers but the BCB was late to release the schedule with players from some of the island’s clubs complaining that they were only told about the revised fixture list as late as Wednesday night.
It remains to be seen how the BCB will deal with these unfulfilled fixtures and whether matches will be forfeited or replayed.
Attempts to contact the Bermuda Cricket Board were unsuccessful on Saturday evening
