Jeff Richardson hails upset win over high-flying St David’s
Somerset coach Jeff Richardson has hailed his team’s upset of previously unbeaten Premier Division 50 overs rivals St David’s at Lord’s last weekend.
Somerset came away with a stunning 94-run win in hostile territory despite being forced to play a man short and Richardson was confident his players could upstage their hosts.
“We have had some encouraging performances and a lot of individual cameo performances by either batters or bowlers,” Richardson told The Royal Gazette.
“But this weekend everything came together; everybody chipped in with the bat and for the most part we fielded really well.”
Led by half-centuries from opening pair Jermal Proctor (52) and Jade Morrisey (52) with middle-order batter Dominic Sabir (62) and captain Alje Richardson (32) chipping in, Somerset posted 244 for six in their allotted overs after being sent in to bat.
“A total of 240 plus in St David's is good runs against any team to be fair, and it was another game where we batted the entire 50 overs,” Richardson said.
“I believe we have batted 50 overs every match that we have played thus far, and I think that's one of the keys to our success. Batting the 50 overs, making sure that guys are out in the field for extended periods of time and then putting runs on the board.
“This is also the first time we have batted first in quite some time and that helped as well.”
Somerset were equally effective with the ball with Sabir leading the charge with five for 23, while fellow all-rounder and new ball partner Proctor took three for 46 and first change Greg Maybury Jr two for 36 as St David’s were dismissed for 150 in 33 overs.
“We bowled quite well and if you look at the extras column you see it was only three wides in total, so I was quite pleased with the bowling,” Richardson said.
“Guys bowled decent lines and lengths and we were forced to do that because we were short in the field. There were gaps so the objective was to bowl to one side of the field so we could defend our total.”
Richardson called upon the services of assistant coach and former Somerset Cup Match star all-rounder Janeiro Tucker to help fill the void after his team turned up at Lord’s with just nine players.
“Janeiro is listed as a player-coach, so that was definitely a no-brainer,” Richardson said.
“Hopefully this win adds some confidence to the guys. It's the same group of guys I have for a few years, but they are all grown up now. They have matured a lot and I can see the maturity in their approach to cricket.
“There's young Jade Morrissey who got a fifty on the weekend batting from the front, so not bad at all.”
Somerset’s clash with St David’s at the weekend was their fifth straight game on the road and Richardson is now looking forward to Saturday’s long-awaited home opener against Willow Cuts at Somerset Cricket Club.
“We finally get a home match and we are looking forward to it,” Richardson said.
"I think it may be a double weekend, as we have Willow Cuts on Saturday and I believe Bailey's Bay on Sunday.“
Somerset will be keen to complete the league double over champions Bay having won by 51 runs at Sea Breeze Oval last month.
