Bermuda Under-19 face doubtful future in 50 overs league

Bermuda Under-19’s future involvement in the First Division 50 overs competition hangs in the balance owing to a scheduling conflict.

The revised 50 overs schedule has resulted with team members having to play for their respective clubs on Saturday and Sunday, thus posing a challenge for the youth team’s coaching staff to field a squad.

The Bermuda Cricket Board is now reviewing the matter to determine whether or not the team will continue playing in the second tier for the rest of the season as initially intended.

“It is being reviewed based on the challenge of the players playing for their clubs they are registered with and also having to represent the under-19s, which could be scheduled on the same match date,” BCB chief executive Cal Blankendal told The Royal Gazette.

“The most important thing is that as long as they are playing for their clubs on those dates, they are still getting the necessary practice in.

“So we just encourage those clubs that have under-19s to feature them in their teams as much as possible.”

Blankendal confirmed the Bermuda Under-19 match with promotion contenders Warwick tomorrow has been postponed.

“The game this weekend is off and then the remainder of the season will be reviewed,” he said.

Bermuda Under-19 are competing in the First Division 50 overs league as preparation for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers, to be held in the summer of 2025.

The team, whose preparations also include weekly training under the direction of head coach Janeiro Tucker, cannot be promoted to the Premier Division 50 overs as their opponents are awarded points instead.

The BCB initially reduced the 50 overs leagues to only one round of matches this season but reversed its decision after coming under fire from clubs, who believed it limited players’ exposure to the longer version of the game and hindered the development of young talent.

Meanwhile, domestic action heats up in the Premier Division this weekend with title contenders St David’s and St George’s set to clash swords at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

Clay Smith’s team will attempt to avenge defeat to their East End rivals in the first meeting between the two sides, while St David’s are coming from a surprise defeat at home to Somerset.

Somerset host champions Bailey’s Bay at Somerset Cricket Club while Western Stars take on Cleveland at Sea Breeze Oval in tomorrow’s remaining top-flight matchups.

Flatts are away to promotion hopefuls PHC and Southampton Rangers at home Western Counties rivals Somerset Bridge at Southampton Oval in tomorrow’s First Division 50 overs fixtures.

Weekend action commences today with St George’s hosting Western Stars at Wellington Oval, Bailey’s Bay take on St David’s at Sea Breeze Oval, while Willow Cuts will square off with Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club in what will be the latter’s first league outing at home this season.

Today’s First Division matches will see Warwick do battle with Somerset Bridge at Southampton Oval while promotion contenders Devonshire Rec host Flatts.

All matches begin at 10.30am.
