Allan Douglas Jr wreaks havoc with ball as Cleveland thrash Western Stars

Allan Douglas Jr

Sea Breeze Oval (Western Stars won toss): Cleveland beat Western Stars beat eight wickets

Allan Douglas Jr produced a devastating spell with the ball as Cleveland made light work of Premier Division 50 overs rivals Western Stars to return to winning ways on Sunday.

The second-change bowler bagged a season-best haul of six for 12 off eight overs, which included two maidens, with his off breaks as Stars were rolled over for a paltry 82 in 25.5 overs.

Douglas opened his account when he bowled Stars opening batter Jaiden Manders and then had player-coach Jekon Edness stumped and Jamori Manders and Seth Campbell caught behind by wicketkeeper Steven Bremar Jr.

The experienced all-rounder picked up his fifth wicket when he trapped Naquan Smith lbw and added the scalp of Rohan Davis, who was bowled.

Douglas kept the batters guessing with his repertoire of deliveries and on a track that held together despite having not been rolled ahead of the match.

“They just couldn’t handle my variation,” Douglas told The Royal Gazette.

“I had the doosra, the carom and the little slider and they were struggling throughout with the variations.

“The wicket wasn’t prepared because the roller had broke so they sent themselves to bat first.

“It was prepared yesterday [Saturday] but was nice actually and still played decent.”

Leg spinner Isaiah Greaves took two for 37 while off spinners Dion Stovell (one for seven) and seamer Gibbons (one for five) claimed one each.

Stars were 48 for one before suffering an astonishing collapse, which featured eight wickets falling for 13 runs in the space of eight overs, and they never recovered as an unrelenting Cleveland attack ran through their opponent’s order with little resistance.

Jaiden Manders (19), Tre Manders (16) and Kevin Hurdle (19) were the only Stars batters making starts at the crease.

Cleveland raced to their target in eleven overs for the loss of two wickets, with Gibbons leading the chase with a boundary-laden 35 and Bremar (29), Mackih McGowan (13) and Stovell (10) all chipping in.

Opening pair McGowan and Gibbons added 31 for the first wicket before Hurdle made the breakthrough in the sixth over when he had the former batter caught behind by wicketkeeper Khiry Furbert.

Gibbons added a further 39 for the second wicket with Bremar before being stumped by Furbert facing the bowling of Tre Manders.

Bremar and Stovell polished off the remaining 17 runs without further loss in just eight balls.

“It was just an all-round good team performance,” Douglas said.

“I just feel Stars wasn’t prepared to play and it made it easier on us, scoring 82 on Saturday and then coming today and scoring 82 again I felt like they are not even trying to recuperate.

“But with my team I felt like we just had an all-round performance. We took our catches and hats off to Bremar who had a stumping and two catches behind.”
