Malachi Jones scores another century as Warwick close in on promotion

Malachi Jones hit his second century of the season and claimed three wickets to guide promotion contenders Warwick to a 93-run win over Flatts at Southampton Oval on Sunday.

The experienced all-rounder smashed fifteen boundaries and three sixes in an aggressive knock of 117, from 107 balls, as he put on 179 for the first wicket with Luke Horan as Warwick posted 258 all out in 45.1 overs after electing to bat.

Horan stroked 52 from 77 balls, which included six boundaries, with Zeri Tomlinson (29) and Cory Burgess (10) the other batters in double figures.

Flatts conceded 33 extras, including 24 wides, but they were helped by a remarkable bowling performance from third- change Keegan Jones, who produced figures of seven for 33 from nine overs.

With an asking run rate of 3.98, Flatts came up short in pursuit of the target as they were dismissed for 165 in 41.3 overs.

Opener Jermaine Clarke was Flatts’ top scorer with 35, Reggie Baker added 25 and Paul Carr-Harvey contributing 20 from further down the order.

Jones also led Warwick’s attack with three for 19 from 7.3 overs while new-ball partner Luke Fulton claimed three for 34 and Horan two for 37.

“A very good win today against a good Flatts team,” Warwick coach Lorenzo Tucker told The Royal Gazette.

“Luke Horan and Malachi Jones continued where they left off, putting on 179 for the first wicket, but we were all out for 258, so I was very disappointed in how the rest of the guys batted.

“Credit to Flatts for reeling it back and making a better game of it. I told my guys to restrict them and bowl well and field with some energy and some effort, and they did that beautifully.

“We pinned Flatts back, put them under pressure and eventually bowled them out for 165, so a very good result for us.”

Elsewhere at Devonshire Rec, hosts Devonshire prevailed by 121 runs against PHC to keep their own promotion bid on track.

Drewonde Bascome and Dean Richards stroked 69 each and Ankoma Cannonier 41 as Devonshire posted 233 all out in 47.3 overs after electing to bat.

Fourth-change Taurean Manders was the pick of the PHC bowling with five for 35 while all-rounder Chris Douglas took two for 27.

PHC got off to a fairly decent start in their reply before two batting collapses proved their demise.

The away side were 71 for one before losing five wickets in the space of thirteen runs in six overs to leave Warwick firmly in the driver’s seat.

Taurean Manders and cousin Gavin Manders added 18 runs for the seventh wicket to momentarily halt the slide before another collapse saw PHC’s remaining four wickets fall for ten runs in the space of four overs.

Devonshire captain Chris Dailey led his team’s attack, claiming seven for 31 from seven overs, while Clay Darrell, Shaquille Pitcher and Dion Ball accounted for the remaining PHC wickets.
