Flatts keep promotion hopes alive by beating Somerset Bridge
Flatts capitalised on the defeat of fellow promotion hopefuls Devonshire Rec to keep alive their hopes of playing top-flight cricket next season.
The Smith’s Parish side came away with a seven-wicket win over First Division 50 overs rivals Somerset Bridge at PHC Field on Sunday, while Devonshire suffered defeat at home to Southampton Rangers.
“The results definitely puts us in pole position for promotion,” an optimistic Flatts captain Kijuan Franks told The Royal Gazette.
Guiding Flatts to victory were opening batter Jan-Johan Nel, who struck an unbeaten century, while Nelson Bascome Jr and Shane Robinson claimed six wickets between them.
Bridge found themselves in deep trouble at 39 for five after electing to bat but recovered to post 166 all out in 44.2 overs.
Joshua Gilbert (60), Donnie Charles (33), Neil Thakur (17) and Shane Hollis (13) led the revival with vital contributions down the order.
Bascome (three for 23) and Robinson (three for 34) did the bulk of the bowling damage, while Jahmai Douglas took two for 24.
In reply, Nel hammered an unbeaten 104 from 75 balls, which contained five sixes and 11 boundaries, while Keegan Jones chipped in with 30 and Franks an unbeaten 11 for Flatts, who scored 172 for three in 25.2 overs.
Noel Woods (one for 13), Hollis (one for 34) and Kieran Richardson (one for 20) accounted for the Flatts wickets to fall.
“Today was a good win, we bowled and fielded well and hats off to J.J. Nel, who made a century,” Franks added.
“We have been playing some good cricket these last couple of weeks so hats off to my team.”
Flatts sit in second ahead of Devonshire Rec, who have a game in hand over their rivals, against Somerset Bridge, with one round remaining in the competition.
Devonshire will face Bridge in back-to-back matches, while Flatts must rely on other results to go their way after playing their quota of matches, as they were originally scheduled to play Bermuda Under-19 in their final 50 overs match.
However, that team have pulled out of the competition as they are unable to field a team with their young players in action for their respective clubs in double-headers on Saturday and Sunday.
The Bermuda Cricket Board has confirmed that no teams will be awarded points from their matches against Bermuda Under-19 in the second half of the season.
Devonshire’s promotion hopes suffered a setback courtesy of a 28-run defeat against Rangers in a low-scoring contest at Devonshire Rec.
Rangers posted 142 all out in 31.3 overs after being sent to bat, with Oyinde Bascome (46), captain Dalin Richardson (21), Randy Bean (18) and Quiluhn Richardson (15) among their leading scorers.
Clay Darrell, on loan from St George’s, was the pick of the Devonshire attack with five for 28, while Jahzardae Samuels (two for 24) and Dion Ball (two for nine) chipped in.
Devonshire found themselves up against the ropes at 67 for six in their reply and never recovered before they were eventually dismissed for 114 in 28.2 overs.
Ajai Daniels and Freeman Lema were Devonshire’s top scorers with 19 each, Ankoma Cannonier added 18, while George O’Brien Jr and Aarondae Thomas both stroked 11.
Richardson (three for 24) and Donte Brangman (three for 36) led Rangers’ bowling.
In the remaining First Division encounter, promoted champions Warwick come away with a comfortable six-wicket win over PHC in yet another low-scoring affair at Southampton Oval.
Warwick all-rounder Malachi Jones claimed seven for 24 from 8.2 overs, which included three maidens, as PHC were dismissed for 53 in 17.2 overs after being sent to bat.
Jones’s fellow all-rounder and new-ball partner Luke Fulton took two for 18 while first change Luke Horan claimed the other wicket to fall as the home team used only three bowlers to dismiss their opponents.
Keishon Wilson (ten) was the only PHC batter in double figures
Zeri Tomlinson then led Warwick’s chase with a quickfire 33 from 22 balls, and along with AI Ible (seven not out) carried his side to the brink of victory after being reduced to 17 for two in the fifth over.
With three runs required for victory, Tomlinson and incoming batter Fulton both departed with no addition to the score, leaving Ible and Jahcobi Butterfield (0) at the crease as the match ended
Darrien Gibbons (two for 13) and Chris Douglas (two for six) accounted for the Warwick wickets to fall.
