Somerset Cricket Club (Western Stars won toss): Somerset beat Western Stars by five wickets

In a game of significant consequences, Somerset relegated Western Stars to the First Division in a match reduced to 46 overs a side because of a late-running church service on the grounds.

Jermal Proctor led the way for Somerset, bowling in-form batter Tre Manders for 18 before scoring a game-high 82 to help his team retain their Premier Division status.

“It was disappointing that I didn’t score a century today,” Proctor said

“I have been out of nick in my last few innings, so I am happy that I scored some runs to help us win the game and now I hope to take this form into the final Cup Match trial.”

Winning the toss and electing to bat, openers Kevin Hurdle (26) and Jaiden Manders (21) gave Western Stars a bright start, putting on an opening stand worth 55 runs before both fell quickly.

Stars were 106 for three at the halfway mark but the Somerset bowlers kept the batters honest. Danté Wellman, who came in at No 3, batted sensibly as wickets fell around him, making 47 with four sixes and three fours.

Kamau Leverock bowled the 41st over and triggered a major collapse with three wickets in his six balls, claiming the wickets of Jamori Manders, Seth Campbell and Naquan Smith to leave Stars reeling at 176 for nine.

Temiko Wilson was the last man to fall, bowled by Leverock for a patient 42 from 67 balls that which included a towering six and two fours.

Leverock finished with figures of four wickets for 12 runs, while Dominic Sabir and Isaiah Richardson pitched in with two wickets apiece, for 42 and 51 runs respectively.

Chasing an under-par target of 188 to win, Somerset opened with two Cup Match hopefuls in Proctor and Alex Dore. The pair played some elegant strokes and capitalised on loose bowling to put on a 45-run partnership before the latter was caught behind off the bowling of Jaiden Manders for 22.

Proctor would display textbook drives and cuts along the way as he brought up his half-century, pulling Hurdle to the square-leg boundary with authority.

Fellow Cup Match hopeful Sabir soon joined Proctor and the pair slowly chipped away at the opponents’ total, carrying the score to 156 for two at the halfway point.

The two would foster a game-high, third-wicket partnership worth 107 runs to take their team to the brink of victory before both fell on 163.

Sabir holed out to Wellman at long-off and Proctor drove one into the hands of Jason Anderson at mid-off in the very next over.

Leverock scored a quickfire 17 from nine balls before Jahniko Francis and Isaiah Richardson polished the remaining runs off with 13 overs to spare.

Brian Hall was Stars’ most successful bowler on the day, finishing with two wickets for 41.
