Treadwell Gibbons Jr has become the third member of the St George’s old guard to miss out on this year’s Cup Match after his exclusion from the final trial on Saturday.

Gibbons, who scored a duck and 23 runs in his two innings in last year’s drawn match, did not make himself available for selection, according to coach Clay Smith.

He joins the injured Charles Trott as well as the unavailable Rodney Trott as members of the 2023 side not playing for the East Enders next week.

“He’s not in the final trials and he’s not available,’’ Smith said.

“Everybody that’s in the final trials has been to training and made themselves available for selection as far as we know.

“He’s been a long-term servant of the club and he’s had his highs and he’s had his lows. Obviously he’s not going to be easy to replace because he’s a very good opening batsman, but We have other youngsters that are coming through and have had a promising season.

“Like I said about Rodney, there comes a time in your programme where you have to rebuild and refocus with new, young players who have the passion to play the sport.

“That’s what we’re looking for right now and I’m hoping that one or two of these guys put their hands up, bat well on Saturday and basically pick themselves.

“My focus is on the players that are right in front of me, getting the best out of them and getting them prepared for Cup Match.”

Azendé Furbert, who opened the batting with Gibbons last year, has been named in the Onias Bascome-captained President’s XI and gets his final chance to impress the selectors, who will convene after the match to choose the final squad .

The Vice-President’s XI will be captained by Delray Rawlins.

Traditionally that position has gone to the vice-captain of St George’s but with injury doubts surrounding wicketkeeper Sinclair Smith, who is the holder of that role and facing a race against time to be fit for Cup Match, it is Bermuda captain Rawlins who is likely to fill that void.
