St George’s have made seven changes from last year’s starting XI as they attempt to wrestle Cup Match away from Somerset.

The East Enders have recalled Oronde Bascome, the last captain to lead them to glory in 2011, when they triumphed by two wickets at Wellington Oval. The 36-year-old, the leading run scorer for St George’s in the Premier Division 50 overs with 430 runs this season has been summoned along with the returning Jonté Smith and Nzari Paynter.

Smith and Paynter are also among the top five leading run scorers in the 50 overs league and have been given the nod as St George’s look to shore up their batting order.

Wicketkeeper Jarryd Richardson, replacing the injured Sinclair Smith, Marcus Scotland and 17-year-old fast bowler Luke Fulton, have received the nod for the first time alongside 32-year-old Kevon Fubler, a former Somerset reserve.

Smith’s unavailability with a hamstring injury means Delray Rawlins, the national captain, has been promoted to the vice-captain’s role.

Rawlins was one of just four players to retain their spots from last year alongside captain Onias Bascome, all-rounder Macai Simmons and fast bowler Zeko Burgess.

Opening batter Azendé Furbert drops out of the playing XI to the reserves, while Brian Hall, who was itching for good news on his 32nd birthday, and veteran Allan Douglas Jr were completely left out.

The 37-year-old Douglas, who made his Cup Match debut in 2010, played with a lot of passion in scoring 45 and picking up two wickets in consecutive deliveries for the President’s XI in the final trial match.

Unlike last year when the selection went on until the early hours of Sunday morning, this time around, the Wendell Smith-led panel concluded the process before midnight on Saturday.
