Fubler family have no issue with Kevon’s switch from Somerset to St George’s
Former Somerset Cup Match player Kevin Fubler insists he has no qualms over his son playing for St George’s in the Annual Classic.
Former Somerset reserve Kevon Fubler has “switched” to the East End side and is poised to realise a dream of showcasing his talents on the big stage, much to the delight of his proud father.
“They [Somerset] didn’t want him so he has gone to St George’s, which I think is the best place for him to be,” former Somerset and Willow Cuts off-spinner Kevin Fubler told The Royal Gazette.
“He said he was ready to go and bowl and I told him to go and do what he has to do. The wicket is probably going to be flat, which probably will suit the slower bowlers.”
Despite his family’s close links to Somerset, Fubler is at ease with his son’s decision to switch allegiance.
“I have no problem with it at all,” he said. “I am a former Somerset player, but that’s now in the past and Somerset got rid of me too,” he said.
“I am very excited for him and hope he gets wickets and bowls them out.”
St George’s colt Fubler has dedicated his Cup Match debut to his father, who made four appearances for Somerset in Cup Match between 1995 and 1998, claiming ten wickets at an average of 25.8.
“He has dedicated his Cup Match debut to me and is really motivated,” the 63-year-old added.
“I told him about the wicket and he said he is going to bowl them out. He said he will do it for me. He is going to be all right.”
Kevon has thrived since joining St George’s on loan from Willow Cuts this season and is a rarity being a Somerset-born player to represent St George’s in Cup Match.
Although thrilled to see his son finally get the opportunity to play in Cup Match, Kevin will not be present at the ground to witness his historic debut partly due to health reasons.
“I want to go to the game but won’t be going because I had a serious stroke five years ago,” he said.
“My left side is messed up, but I am good. It’s also too hot, so I will watch it on television.”
