This year’s Cup Match marks the end of an era for umpire Emmerson Carrington, who is standing in the Annual Classic for the last time.

Bermuda’s only international umpire, who has been a regular feature since making his debut in 2014 at Somerset Cricket Club, has decided that this will be his last time officiating in the island’s biggest event.

“I think I've had enough and from 2014 to now is a long time,’’ Carrington, 58, told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s time to step aside and let somebody else get a chance. I'm obviously going to miss the occasion itself and the historical significance is not lost to me and what it means to Bermudians, but I’m not going to miss the game itself.

“It’s a long, hot, tiring two days and it’s a lot of pressure to get every decision right, so I can’t say I’m going to miss it.

“Because I’m the only international umpire on the island, chances are as long I’m available the clubs will choose me, but now that I won’t be available, it gives somebody else a chance to step up.”

Carrington pointed to his maiden appearance as the Cup Match he remembers most.

“That was the most memorable one for me because I came out of it to get some good reviews,’’ he said.

The president of the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association plans to finish off the domestic cricket season before he gradually steps back from officiating.

“Right now I’m thinking if I’m to officiate locally, it won’t be as often,’’ the Barbados-born police officer said.

“I’ll finish this season but next year I’ll have to think about my participation.

“Internationally, I’ll still be involved in umpire education and development, but I won’t be umpiring any more.”

Carrington will be joined in the middle at this year’s Cup Match by Alex Knight, with Anderson Cumberbatch named third umpire. Precious Smith is the fourth umpire while Linnell Williams, who made history by becoming the first woman to referee the match last year, has retained her position.
