‘Conflicted’ Derrick Brangman not an option, says Gus Logie
St David’s league captain Derrick Brangman would have not been placed in a tight spot by being asked to play for Bailey’s Bay in the now-cancelled Eastern Counties second round at Lord’s.
In terms of the Eastern Counties rules, Brangman is locked in to play for Bay, the club that picked him as a colt in 2017. The left-arm spinner was recalled by Bay for last month’s first round against Cleveland County, which saw him pick up four wickets, as Bay prevailed by 142 runs to extend their reign as champions.
The 36-year-old then had a tough decision to make, to play or not to play against St David’s, if the match had gone ahead.
Bay coach Gus Logie mentioned that since the Eastern Counties is more community-centred, they could not afford to put Brangman in a tight spot.
“We were not considering Derrick Brangman to play against St David’s,” Logie told The Royal Gazette. “We told him that we find it very difficult for us to select him to play for us against St David’s.
“It’s a community thing and at the end of the day we didn't want to upset that. I think it would have been difficult for him in any case to play against his own team.
“Any mistakes made, he could have been unnecessarily accused of so many things. He didn’t need that distraction and certainly Bay didn’t need that, either.”
The impending Hurricane Ernesto has put a damper on the excitement that usually precedes any round of Eastern Counties. Bay were meant to have unveiled their selected players in front of their members on Wednesday, with St David’s to have done the same on Thursday.
“To be quite honest, we had not sat down to select a squad,’’ the former West Indies batter said before it became clear through the government updates that the match could not go ahead.
“I don’t think we will because at the end of the day, if you look at what’s happening, I don’t think any cricket will be played.”
There has been talk of having a reserve day for Eastern Counties, but that is highly unlikely to occur this year because of the already tight schedule, with Bay expected to proceed to the August 31 final, where Flatts await.
“I don’t know what the rules are, whether or not the match will be rescheduled,’’ Logie said.
“It’s really unfortunate nature has to decide the outcome of this match. We were looking forward to a fair contest on the field of play.”
