Bermuda Under-19’s tour to the United States ended on a gloomy note yesterday when their third match against the Ricardo Powell Cricket Academy Magic was called off.

Strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday — which saw RPCA Magic win the second 40-over encounter by 45 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method — left the Param Veer Sports Complex in an unsuitable state for the third match to be played.

Janeiro Tucker’s side, who were using the matches as part of preparations for next year’s ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup Americas Qualifier, were forced to hold a training session before they return to the island today.

“We trained on Sunday because of bad weather from all the rain on Saturday,” Tucker told The Royal Gazette.

“The two games we played were definitely different days of cricket. First game we played, it was a turning wicket and guys just didn't play spin well. The next day we improved until the rain stopped play with eight overs and just over 40 runs needed.

“We were playing a team from the unknown, but the second game we had a look at the bowling and we played the spin way better.

“We bowled and fielded really well in both games, took some great catches but now it's about trying to change mindset, get the players to improve mentally and physically.”

Brenton Parchment, the RPCA Magic coach, while disappointed that the final match could not be played, was grateful for the opportunity for his players to play one-day cricket.

“It’s disappointing that we didn’t get a chance to play today, I think the boys were enjoying the experience,’’ Parchment said.

“The boys had a lot of fun in the first two matches. They don’t play a lot of 40 or 50-over cricket in America.

“We were meant to play 50 overs, but due to the heavy dew in the morning, we weren't able to start on time as we would have liked. The matches were then reduced to 40 overs.

“Even though conditions were difficult, they weren't good for batting and you could see from the results. They didn’t bat all the allotted overs, that was the disappointing part which could be because they don’t play this kind of cricket.

“However, it was a good experience for them and good exposure to play against the Bermuda touring team.

“The games were played in good spirit, so it was good to see both teams out there, playing competitively in a respectable manner and environment.

“For us the games were less about the results and more about the practice and the exposure.

“We wanted to provide our players with good competition and good training to the Bermuda team.”
