Dominant T20 fifty caps big weekend for Burrows
It was a triumphant weekend for Ras Solomon Burrows, who followed up leading Willow Cuts to the Western Counties Cup with a dominant start to the Athene T20 First Division on Sunday.
The Cuts captain, apparently intent on showing he can score at an appreciable rate, smashed 81 off only 47 balls, with five sixes and nine fours, to anchor their innings of 189 for six against Somerset Bridge at Somerset Cricket Club.
Chakote Basden and Micah Simons each chipped in with 33 not out to set up a total that would prove well beyond Bridge. Samir Tavares was the best Bridge bowler with two for 18 from his four overs.
In reply, Bridge never had a chance to put on the accelerator as they crawled to 121 for nine, with Tavares again proving the pick of the performers with 40 from 30 balls including two fours and three sixes.
At Lord’s in St David’s, the home side cantered past Devonshire Rec by seven wickets.
Cup Match star Marcus Scotland scored 43 off 33 balls for St David’s, sharing in an unbroken stand of 53 for the fourth with Justin Pitcher (26) after Devonshire Rec were bowled out for 92.
Openers Gerald Simons and Ankoma Cannonier were the only batters to put up a decent fight for the visiting side, each scoring 30.
St David’s captain Derrick Brangman, barely 24 hours after he limped off injured for Southampton Rangers in the Western Counties final, picked up two wickets. Aaron Paynter and Isaiah O’Brien also struck twice.
At Sea Breeze Oval, Flatts needed four runs off the last ball to beat Southampton Rangers by four wickets in a low-scoring affair.
Set a target of 93, Flatts openers Keegan Jones (12) and JJ Nel (33) put on 40 runs to lay the foundation for the win. It was left to veteran Paul Harvey (19 not out) to hit the winning boundary.
Earlier, Nacori Smith was the only Southampton batter in double figures with 28. Flatts contributed to the Rangers total with 24 extras.
Sai Kumar was Flatts’ best bowler with three for 20. Jones took three for 22, while captain Kijuan Franks claimed two for six.
Macai Jacobs was Rangers’ best bowler with three for 17.
