St David’s clinch Junior Eastern Counties with landslide win
St David’s piled on the runs in a landslide 309-run triumph over Cleveland County in the Junior Eastern Counties Competition series decider at Lord’s on Saturday.
Isaiah O’Brien (174) and Sa-Qui Robinson (101) led the charge with unbeaten hundreds while guest player Luke Horan (69) helped himself to a fifty as St David’s piled up a record 374 for four in their allotted 40 overs after electing to bat.
O’Brien also featured in an unbroken 221-run fourth-wicket partnership with Robinson that put the match far beyond Cleveland’s reach.
“Isaiah and Sa-Qui showed their leadership to work together and put on a batting display that was entertaining and memorable with both recording their maiden centuries,” a St David’s club official told The Royal Gazette.
“They were ably assisted by Luke Horan who batted well to help lay the foundation for the team to push on and record a big score.
“The team put together a complete performance with batting, bowling and fielding to bounce back from a disappointing performance in the second match of the series when the batting failed to deliver after bowling Cleveland out for 91.
“St David’s is proud of the manner the players approached the match and applied themselves to execute the game plan and retain the Eastern Counties Cricket Association Junior Cricket competition.
“The junior counties competition means a lot to the young players, who take pride in representing the club. The future looks bright for St David’s with a good crop of young players coming through.
“It is good to see cricket being played at this age level. The players from both teams exhibit a passion and love for the game, and will serve their clubs well with future stock to assume their place in the senior Eastern Counties competition in the years to come.”
Zakai Gibbons was the pick of St David’s bowling, claiming three for 12, while fellow seamer Zakai Minors took two for seven as challengers Cleveland replied with 66 all out.
Middle order batter Cadence Douglas led Cleveland’s resistance with 30, his team’s only batter managing double figures, while female seamer Ja’Shay Trott was their most successful bowler with two for 82.
St David’s and Cleveland competed in a three-match series, which the former won 2-1, in the absence of rivals Bailey’s Bay and Flatts who were unable to field teams.
