Trott returns to action after lengthy lay-off

Charles Trott, whose season appeared over when he suffered a recurrent broken metatarsal bone in his left foot, is back playing in the Athene T20 for Willow Cuts.

The Bermuda all-rounder picked up the injury in May, while playing for St George’s against St David’s in a 50-over league match. This saw the 26-year-old miss out on selection for Cup Match.

As he works his way to full fitness, the left-hander has made the loan switch to Cuts. He made his debut on Sunday against Somerset Bridge, scored 19 runs off ten balls batting at No 6 and bowled two overs, as Cuts won the match by 68 runs.

Dexter Basden, the Cuts coach, is delighted to have Trott on loan, as they chase promotion for this format. Basden’s side are fighting to go up, with their competition likely to come from St David’s and Flatts, who were also victorious on Sunday.

“Charles Trott is on loan for the T20, he is still a St George’s player,’’ Basden said. “We’re delighted to have him, he brings his international and Cup Match experience. He’s a left-hander, which is something special and gets along with the other coaches, Herbie Bascome and Roger Leverock.

“Some of our guys work on the weekends, if he could play and help, we appreciate that. Winning this T20, that’s our goal. We need to get promoted.

“We’ve also taken Drewonde Bascome on loan from Devonshire Rec. His first game will be this week; we submitted his paperwork last week.”

Asked if Trott was fully fit to play, Basden conceded that the player was not at his best, but pointed out that T20 is not as demanding as the longer formats of cricket.

“I would say he’s probably about 80 per cent, he’s not 100 per cent,’’ the coach said.

“He’s not running in from ten paces, he’s running in from four paces, which is good with me. It’s just a matter of putting the ball in the right areas. These guys know the game, so that really helps.

“It’s T20, he’s not going to be on the field the whole day and he only bowls four overs. He seems to be enjoying his time back playing cricket.”
