Bailey’s out to seal Athene T20 title
At a time when cricket clubs are battling against dwindling numbers due to clashing commitments, Bailey’s Bay have a great chance wrap up the Athene T20 League title when they face Cleveland County at Lord’s.
Bay are yet to taste defeat in the single round-robin format of the this season’s competition. A win over Cleveland will see them crowned champions, with a chance for more silverware when they head into the semi-final and final to conclude the season.
Should Bay take the league honours, it would be a reversal of fortunes with St George’s, who dethroned them as 50-over champions this season. Clay Smith’s side were also looking to make it four T20 titles in a row, but back-to-back defeats two weeks ago have ruled them out of the race.
Any slip-up for Bay will see Somerset, who play second-bottom Western Stars, also have a chance of being crowned champions. This would then leave the title to be decided on net run-rate.
Gus Logie, the Bay coach has seen bowlers carry them through for most of the matches in the shortest format, wants the batters to come to the party.
“We’ve been through some close games and been able to win,’’ Logie said. “We want to put more runs on the board to give our bowlers a little bit of a breather.
“It’s been the bowlers coming out tops, so we need the batters to step up when given an opportunity.”
Cleveland have also had their challenges with players, as seen when they failed to raise a full team to play against St George’s at the beginning of the month.
In the absence of regular players, Logie will bank on the likes of Delray Rawlins, Azendé Furbert, Coolidge Durham and Jarryd Richardson to win the title.
“We haven't had numbers for quite some time coming out to train, so it really makes it difficult,’’ he said.
“It’s just been two or three guys who have been consistently in training. We just hope they can produce the best that they can on the day.
“We trust that the senior players on island certainly will provide the necessary experience that so badly need.
“We've done pretty well in the T20 at this point in time. We’re hoping that this continues with whatever team we put out on the park.”
