Kevon Fubler excited at recall to national cricket squad
Kevon Fubler is thrilled to be back in the national cricket squad as the team prepare to travel to Argentina for the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier.
Bermuda will play Bahamas, Belize, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Panama, Surinam and Argentina in the round-robin tournament, which begins on December 6, and Fubler is looking forward to his international return.
“It feels good to be back in the senior team and I am confident and just excited to get going,” Fubler, 32, told The Royal Gazette.
“It's definitely an honour to represent your country, but I feel that my cricket is up there right now and I feel like I am 20, 21 years old again.”
The Willow Cuts spinner, who spent the second half of last season on loan to St George’s in order to play in Cup Match, previously played for the senior team under coaches David Moore and Gus Logie and he also has experience of playing in Argentina.
“I have been to Argentina before with the team but guys like Irving Romaine and Glenn Blakeney were there the last time I went,” Fubler said.
“Times have changed and it's a different group of guys now, but I definitely feel that the confidence is there.
“It's been so long since I played in Argentina that I don't know what to expect of the wickets now, but I have spoken to other guys that have been down there not too long ago with the senior team. I am taking notes and just going to put my best foot forward to show why I should be on this national team.
“I feel that I am definitely up to the standard for international level because I already know what to expect and it's not like I am a new player just coming into international cricket.”
After being in the international wilderness for a number of years, Fubler admits he was surprised to receive a call-up.
“I was a little surprised,” he said. “Everybody knows I left Willow Cuts and went to St George’s' for league cricket and ever since then my game has improved because of the level of cricket and playing with better cricketers. My standards are high now so that gives me incentive to maintain them.
National coach Cal Waldron is pleased to have Fubler’s experience and all-round qualities at his disposal for the upcoming tournament.
“He comes into the team as a lefty who can bat, bowl and field also,” Waldron said.
“That gives us another left- handed spinner as well as someone who can be a utility player in the batting order. He is also a tidy fielder.”
The ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier is the first stage of the qualification process for the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup.
The top three sides in the tournament will advance to the regional final, where they will be joined by Canada, who were given a bye after participating in the T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and United States this summer.
Fubler, who has also represented Bermuda at youth level, has no doubts that the squad contains the ability to make qualification an easy task.
“We’ve got experience, a good group of youngsters and I feel like the confidence in the team is very high,” he said.
“It’s a good team and obviously we are the defending champions so everybody is going to want to beat us, but I feel that if we keep a level head and stick to our game plan we will come out on top.”
Fubler is coming off a highly successful season with St George’s after helping the east enders to capture the Premier Division 50 overs and Athene T20 Knockout Cup titles, while also making his debut in Cup Match at Somerset Cricket Club.
“I took a lot of flak for that but at the end of the day it was a good decision,” Fubler said.
“I am 32 and I didn’t feel Somerset was going to change anything to where I would have got in one time.
“I would have had to work my way in and that would have taken time but the opportunity was right there to go St George's, so I took it.”
