Bermuda beat Argentina in T20 World Cup warm-up
Onias Bascome and Jonté Smith showed their class as Bermuda’s cricketers won their first T20 World Cup warm-up match in Argentina on Monday.
Bascome top scored with 49, off 31 deliveries, before Smith took four wickets as Bermuda beat Argentina by 42 runs at the Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires just four days before the start of the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier tournament.
Bermuda captain Terryn Fray lost the toss with his side put into bat and they suffered an early blow when opening batter Alex Dore scored just two before being caught by Santiago Duggan.
Tre Manders, who came in at No 3, combined with Fray for a partnership of 38 until Manders was trapped leg before in the seventh over to leave Bermuda at 44-2.
The dismissal of Manders brought St George’s captain Bascome to the crease and he set about the Argentina bowlers, scoring five sixes and outlasting Fray, who fell for 43.
Bascome was run out for 49 to leave Bermuda at 126 for four after 16.4 overs, with Dominic Sabir (11), Dion Stovell (eight not out) and Derrick Brangman (13) contributing to Bermuda’s total of 154.
After losing opening batter Bruno Angeletti, who was bowled by Zeko Burgess, Alejandro Ferguson and captain Pedro Baron threatened to do some damage, with their partnership reaching 58 before Baron was caught by Smith off the bowling of Stovell.
With that wicket went Argentina’s hopes as the next seven batters failed to make it into double figures as they stuttered to a final score of 112 for eight.
