Cup Match captain Onias Bascome leads St George’s exodus

Cup Match captain Onias Bascome has left St George’s Cricket Club in advance of the upcoming domestic cricket season.

One of the big names to appear on the Bermuda Cricket Board’s list of domestic transfers, which was released this afternoon, Bascome will be joined in St David’s by older brother Oronde, Brandon Swainson and Kevon Fubler, who was on loan at St George’s last season before making his Cup Match debut and had previously been expected to make that move permanent.

Bascome’s departure could have major implications for the Annual Classic this year, with St George’s rarely looking outside the club when it comes to choosing a captain, although Lionel Cann was given the honour while playing for St David’s in 2019.

St George’s have lost a number of players from last season’s championship-winning side, with Q’Shai Darrell returning to Cleveland County after one year, Charles Trott choosing to join Pembroke Hamilton Club and Oyinde Bascome moving west to play for Southampton Rangers.

St David’s, who are probably on cloud nine after the arrivals of the Bascome brothers and Fubler, also welcome another international in Tre Manders, who joins from Western Stars alongside Naquan Smith.

Another high-profile name on the move is Kamau Leverock, who has joined Warwick Workmen’s Club from Somerset.

Cleveland, who forfeited games through a lack of players last season, appear to be struggling for players even more after the departure of Cup Match stalwart Dion Stovell to Southampton Rangers. Allan Douglas Jr, Treadwell Gibbons Jr and Freeman Lema have moved to Devonshire Recreation Club, while Jalani Richardson has joined Warwick.

St George’s have signed only two players in Jason Anderson from Western Stars and Zaki Gibbons-DeShields from St David’s.
