BCB hints at Kamau Leverock recall to national squad

Cal Blankendal, the Bermuda Cricket Board executive director, has hinted that Kamau Leverock will soon be welcomed back into the national squad.

Speaking on The Daily Hour on Tuesday morning, Blankendal equated Bermuda not having Kamau Leverock to the Argentinian football team playing without Lionel Messi.

“Every country wants to have its best players available,” Blankendal said.

“If Argentina is playing Brazil and Lionel Messi is not playing, you’ll think that’s not important because they have such a great team. But if one of your best players is not available, I know the coaches are scratching their heads.

“I know when Jamal [Hardtman, show host] was coaching youth football at North Village, if one of his players wasn’t available, he’ll say he’s OK, but he’ll be like who am I going to put in that position?

“To have someone of Kamau Leverock’s calibre and experience bodes well for any country in the Americas region, especially Bermuda. We’re very small and we don’t have a lot of elite athletes, so to have him indicate his wish to return is fantastic.

“Hopefully, with the team having him around in the near future, we can go and try to get closer [to qualification]. We did get close the last time he was with us and hopefully he gets us over the line with his ability and we can now talk about 2026.”

Leverock, who came out of international retirement to again make himself available for selection, recently met with the BCB to iron out any lingering issues prior to his potential return to the national squad.

If Blankendal’s remarks are anything to go by, it is likely the former captain will be included in the team for the North Americas Cup in Cayman Islands next month, with the squad expected to be announced sometime this week.

There is no denying the ability of Leverock, who has been keeping in shape overseas, and the all-rounder can play a significant role as Bermuda seek to mount a strong challenge at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Americas Regional Final later this year.
