Kamau Leverock made to wait for Bermuda recall

Kamau Leverock has been left out of the Bermuda squad for the North American Cup in Cayman Islands next month.

Leverock, who stepped away from international cricket last year, announced his intention to return to the fold this month.

Bermuda coach Cal Waldron confirmed that the all-rounder would not be considered for selection this time on the grounds of fairness to those that had already committed.

But Waldron indicated that Leverock stands a chance of being selected for the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Regional Final in Canada in June.

“Kamau Leverock is part of our training pool of players for the qualifiers,” Waldron told The Royal Gazette. “He’ll be able to train with the rest of the squad when we are back from Cayman.

“The timing for this tour just wasn’t right. It would have been unfair on the guys that have been training all this time. Had he not said he is coming out of retirement, we would still have gone with other players.

“We had to make sure that the players that have been training were given the go-ahead.

There are a number of changes to the Bermuda squad with Tre Manders, Chare Smith, Dion Stovell and Jonté Smith missing from the team which won the Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier in Argentina in December.

Former captain Delray Rawlins returns without the burden of captaincy, with Allan Douglas Jr and Marcus Scotland also returning. Southampton Rangers team leader Dalin Richardson makes a first appearance in the squad since 2022.

Commenting on the changes, Waldron admitted that those not part of the trip were not available for selection.

“Some guys are not available due to work and personal commitments,” the coach said. “We’ve got this tour, then we have a quick turnaround before June. Guys have work and family commitments, so we just have to respect that.”

Scotland, who missed out on the trip to Argentina, is thrilled to be back in the side.

“I am very happy and of course honoured to be selected to represent Bermuda again,” the 22-year-old said.

“I have been working with the Ace Programme in the UK a lot over the winter. In recent weeks, I’ve been training with the Bermuda squad, as well as preseason training with St David’s County Cricket Club.”

Richardson, 24, who played against the Americas Select last September, is not as anxious as he was when he was called up to the national team three years ago.

“I’m not as scared as I was the first time because I’ve been there, so I know the level,” the former Bermuda Under-19 captain said.

“I’m looking forward to this new challenge. I felt like I needed to make myself available for these types of tours because Southampton Rangers hasn’t had many players representing Bermuda.

“I had to sort out other aspects of my life first before putting cricket as my first priority. I grew up playing under-19 cricket with guys like Alex Dore, Marcus Scotland and Jarryd Richardson, so it’s nice to be part of the senior team with them.”

The team is scheduled to leave for Cayman on April 14, with Waldron’s side slated to play two warm-up matches before the start of the inaugural tournament. Bermuda are set to play against Bahamas, Cayman, Canada and the United States.

“We’ll continue training until we depart for Cayman,” the coach added.

“We have drawn up a training schedule. Hopefully, the weather cooperates for us to be able to get outside and train for the tournament.”
