Coach Cal Waldron stays positive as Bermuda back in action

Coach Cal Waldron expects positive response against Bahamas

Bermuda cricket coach Cal Waldron is backing his team to react positively when they take on the Bahamas in the North American Cup on Wednesday.

The national team take on their Caribbean opponents at 4.30pm Bermuda time, 48 hours after a chastening ten-wicket defeat to the United States in their third game of the tournament on Monday.

Waldron knows his job is to look at the positives and banish any negativity in the squad between now and the time the first ball is bowled at the Jimmy Powell Oval.

“It all starts with me,” Waldron said. “I need to get my mind into looking at the positives out of the matches that we’ve played and reassure them that we are doing things right and this could be a one-off result.

“Individuals need to mentally psych themselves up to know that they are better than the last performance and they need to approach it with the idea that they are better than that and get back to the things they know they are good at.”

Waldron admits that there is likely to be some rotation in the team, with ten players having played in all three matches and he hopes that the changes will not prove too disruptive.

“We want to bring in some other guys to give them some game time so that they get used to the conditions and playing in this atmosphere,” Waldron said.

“Hopefully that doesn’t shift too much of the mindset that we are in. I want to see us get the mental approach right after such an unfavourable performance and we carry on from where we were with the Cayman match.”

Bermuda’s bowlers have thus far provided the positives in the tournament but the batters, and particularly the middle to lower order, have struggled to make runs, with the last six wickets falling for just 21 runs against the US.

Playing spin has also proved problematic but Waldron is keen to point out that the big days for the team are in June and that problems can be solved.

“We are doing some things positive and we’ve bowled extremely well, even in the loss yesterday,” the coach said.

“We are getting guys in the top order deep into the innings but we now need them to close it out and get all the way to the end and get a big total.

“Once the field opens up, the middle block is the engine room and the dirty part of the game, where guys have to run the ones hard because there are not many boundaries available at this tournament.

“We also have to sort out our mental approach to spin. We’re having the conversation with the players about how we approach it and in order to grow and get better you have to be in uncomfortable positions and test yourself.

“We’ll go back to basics and that goes along with the mindset of being positive that you can do it. Yesterday we were taking wild swings with the ball and we just need to change the approach. We need to get back to the drills of playing spin, which will enable us to get better.”
