Single mom jailed for cannabis importation

A single mother will spend Christmas behind bars after she today admitted importing $250,000 worth of cannabis into the Island.Shanae Vanderpool, 26, of Fenton Drive, Pembroke pleaded guilty to conspiring to import a controlled substance.The mother of a six-year-old also admitted possessing a controlled substance.Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told Magistrates' Court that Vanderpool was arrested at LF Wade International Airport on Tuesday.Customs officers discovered seven vacuum-sealed bags containing approximately 2,500g of cannabis, wrapped around her thighs.That quantity of cannabis would sell for between $115,000 and $258,600 on the streets of Bermuda, depending on how it is packaged.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Vanderpool in custody until January 21, when she is expected to return to court for sentencing.
