Residents, Police made for a 'relatively routine' holiday - Premier

Premier Paula Cox believes an increased community effort and police presence ensured the New Year's holiday passed without major incident.Yesterday in a statement, the Bermuda Police Service said the three-day weekend was “relatively routine”. A spokesman said: “There was a large police presence from east to west with officers from all units being called upon to police over the New Year's period.“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their support and cooperation; we recognise we could not achieve any of our weekend success without the support of the community.”Ms Cox added: “[I am] pleased the community celebrated what has been for the most part, a quiet Christmas, with many choosing to relax with their family and friends.”She also credited the efforts of the Minister of National Security David Burch and the Bermuda Police Service for increasing police presence and visibility over the holiday. She added: “I know that one major hotel had significantly enhanced their security measures for New Year's Eve. I was at the Somerset Cricket Club for the football game on Saturday and I was on Court Street Saturday night for the opening of a building for Chewstick and the dancing of the Gombeys where I saw a good police presence.“I am heartened that more people in the community are stepping up, speaking out and providing the evidence that police need to help restore law and order in our community.”Ms Cox said these contributing factors “are working in tandem towards a positive shift so we have less infractions”.Government also plans to “redouble” its efforts to work with the police and the community to ensure crime goes down. During the weekend one man was attacked and someone attempted an armed robbery. Police also arrested 11 people for driving whilst impaired and issued 47 stop and searches. A spokesman added: “It should noted that some arrests were made for infractions such as minor drug possession, affray, domestic deputes and drink driving.”
