Man stole from friends

A man who robbed an acquaintance of cash and stole a laptop and other electronics from a friend appeared in Magistrates’ Court.Jamaine Salaam, 36, of no fixed abode, admitted to robbing Somerset resident Kevin Roberts of $120 cash last Friday. He also admitted to stealing an HP laptop computer, an external hard-drive and a Samsung cellular phone from friend Cynthia Anderson, of Warwick, on Saturday. The court heard the first incident happened when Salaam showed up at Mr Roberts’ house to visit around 12.30am and asked for a dry shirt as the one he was wearing had gotten wet from the rain.Salaam also asked Mr Roberts for $5 cash to put some gas in his motorcycle and, after the complainant gave him $3, Salaam complained it wasn’t enough.Mr Roberts gave him another $1 from a bundle of cash in his pocket, but Salaam ripped the money, totalling $120, from his grasp and ran off.Salaam was arrested on Monday and admitted to turning up at Mr Roberts’ house. He told police that after a tussle with Mr Roberts he saw the money fall from his pocket during the struggle, but he denied taking it.In the second incident Ms Anderson out of her own kindness decided to allow Salaam to stay at her house as he had no place to stay.Sometime on Saturday, she received information about Salaam and decided it was best that he not stay at her house. She called her home number and told Salaam that he should move out and he agreed.Ms Anderson assumed he had left and got a friend to go to house and confirm it, but when at her home later that day she realised that electronics including a laptop, valued at $1,500 had gone missing. In a police interview Salaam admitted to removing the items but said he only borrowed them and intended to return them. The prosecutor told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that Salaam had previous convictions dating back to 1990 for violent offences and dishonesty. The magistrate ordered a social inquiry report and psychiatric and BARC reports.Salaam will re-appear in court on February 28 for sentencing.
