Mothers of crash driver and victim left shocked by jail sentence

An emotional Roslyn Amory exits Supreme Court after drunk driver Angela Ambrosini was sentenced to a year in jail for injuring her teenage son Shakir Amory.

The mother of an injured teenager and the mother of the drunk driver who hurt him both expressed shock after the culprit was jailed yesterday.Angela Ambrosini, 37, was handed a one-year sentence for knocking 16-year-old Shakir Amory off his bike while more than two-and-a-half times the alcohol limit. Her mother, Christine Ambrosini, told the victim’s mother Roslyn Amory after the court hearing that her daughter would lose everything, including her job, as a result.Mrs Amory, who burst into tears, later told reporters: “I didn’t think that she was going to get that.”However, she said: “I just felt that the sentence should be something that if anybody else came after this, it would deter them. This should.”Puisne Judge, Carlisle Greaves expressed a similar sentiment as he jailed Ambrosini, telling her: “Nobody wins in these cases. Everybody loses, except we hope that others are persuaded never to do this nonsense again.”CedarBridge Academy student Mr Amory is from a family of devout Seventh-day Adventists. He was riding his auxiliary cycle home from a fellowship dinner to mark the Sabbath when Angela Ambrosini’s car struck him in South Road, Devonshire, at 11.20 pm on Sunday March 6.He spent four months in hospital recuperating from the severe head injuries and multiple fractures he suffered. Now aged 17, he’s back at school and working towards graduation and college. However, he still suffers from intellectual impairment and memory loss, and may face further surgeries.Asked how she feels about Angela Ambrosini, Mrs Amory said she sent a message to her a week after the accident that “we forgive her…we have no bad feelings.”She explained yesterday: “We all sin. If I don’t forgive her, I’m not going to have healing. We have got to move on.”Her family will file papers today with the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in the hope of recovering some of Mr Amory’s hospital bills.Meanwhile Ambrosini’s lawyer, Larry Mussenden, will file papers with the Court of Appeal, appealing her sentence.During yesterday’s hearing, Mr Mussenden expressed “some surprise” that prosecutor Nicole Smith asked the judge to jail Ambrosini. Before his client pleaded guilty in November, he’d understood the Crown would not seek a custodial sentence as the mandatory minimum 12-month jail term can be suspended in exceptional circumstances.Mr Mussenden argued yesterday that Ambrosini’s previous good character and remorse were among the mitigating factors.Speaking after her daughter was taken to the cells, Christine Ambrosini, 64, from Pembroke, told reporters: “I’m very surprised, very distressed.”She said she’d hoped her daughter would get “maybe a suspended sentence or probation,” explaining: “I’ve had lots of discussions with the lawyers.”Asked how her daughter reacted to being jailed, she replied: “I spoke to her for a couple of minutes and she’s very distressed, obviously.”

Christine Ambrosini (right), mother of drunk driver Angela Ambrosini, told reporters her daughter was devastated to be handed a prison sentence, and had not expected jail time.
