Judge allows for further detention of suspect

Jakai Harford

A Pembroke man suspected of gun-related crimes was remanded into custody without charge to allow detectives to continue their investigations.Jakai Harford, 28, was arrested on Saturday after Police raided a home in the St Monica’s Road area of Pembroke and seized a loaded gun, cocaine, cannabis and cash.On Wednesday, detectives were granted permission by Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves to hold Mr Harford for a further 14 days while they await the outcome of forensic tests. The application was made under amendments to the Firearms Act passed by Parliament last summer. The tough new legislation allows Police to hold suspects for up to a month with the permission of a judge if they need time to secure or preserve evidence or get the results of forensic tests.Previously, they could only hold someone without charge for a maximum of three days.
