Help me fix border control gaps, Burch asks customs officials
National Security Minister David Burch asked customs officials to help him fix any weaknesses in the Island’s border control operations.Sen Burch spoke to HM Customs officials to mark World Customs Day.He said the creation of his Ministry in 2010 had strengthened the Island’s border control and the three entities Police, Immigration and HM Customs would benefit from being in the same organisational structure.“I am aware that there are challenges and in some cases weaknesses,” he said. “It is my responsibility to address those and I will be calling on you for assistance and a renewed commitment to do so.“Make your criticism constructive, your approach solution oriented and together we will up our game and enjoy even greater success.”He added that Bermuda benefited whenever customers officers seized firearms, illegal drugs and currency.“Bermuda needs you well deployed, focused and well equipped as a virtual front line organisation in the criminal justice team,” he said.He thanked customs officers for their hard work and recognised the Collector of Customs, Winniefred Fostine-DeSilva, for her 40 years if service to Bermuda during the ceremony.
