Witnesses describe daylight murder

A police officer stands guard at a cordon at the junction of Mangrove Bay Road and East Shore Road, Sandys as officers collect evidence following a shooting death yesterday afternoon.

A 29-year-old man was murdered in broad daylight yesterday after four gun shots were fired through Mangrove Bay in Somerset. The victim from Warwick, who has not yet been named by police, was pronounced dead by an on-call physician shortly after 3pm.According to eyewitnesses, four shots were fired back-to-back at a pink house at the junction of Somerset Road and East Shore Road yesterday afternoon.People working and socialising in the area thought the noise came from an air-gun or construction work, but an older man went to the house and learnt someone had been hurt. The incident marks the first shooting death of the year. The last person fatally shot was Raymond Troy (Yankee) Rawlins who was killed at the Spinning Wheel Nightclub on Court Street in Pembroke last August.Resident Keith Godfrey told The Royal Gazette he was at the Country Squire when he heard the gun shots and saw a man running from the scene.“I was convinced something was happening. I said go check things out and this was about half an hour later.“A man went inside and found this guy was in the bathroom with a gun shot wound to his chest and apparently (the victim) was related to the security guard (who worked near-by).”The 49-year-old bar patron said someone called 911, and police arrived 45-minutes later to conduct their investigation.Dozens of people lined the Mangrove Bay area yesterday afternoon and watched as officers from the Serious Crime and Forensic Support Units surveyed the crime scene.Police cordoned off the house, a former barber shop and grocery store, which one man referred to as a “Somerset landmark”.They also blocked off 200 metres of surrounding area, including a pharmacy and gym. Traffic was stopped and people were urged to make alternative arrangements to get to and from the west end. Police conducted stop checks to search vehicles entering and leaving the west end via Somerset Bridge.Several on-lookers who spoke to this paper said the shooting did not surprise them.Owner of Country Squire Donald Hassell said every community was being affected by gun violence and added: “It's a common occurrence now.”Another man who asked not to be named called the violence “disgusting” and said: “People are doing it at random and it is not good for Bermuda.”Several politicians spoke about the latest shooting, including Premier Paula Cox who condemned the loss of life.“The cycle of violent behaviour continues to permeate through our community and another life has been lost. We certainly extend our sympathy to the family of the young man who has died.“Our community must understand that we will continually suffer until we foster a no tolerance for crime and demand that perpetrators as well as those who enable them are held accountable.“Only a rebuilding of respect for human life and the rule of law can restore a sense of well-being to our home,” the Premier added.According to a Police spokesman, officers responded to the confirmed firearm incident shortly after 2pm. Upon their arrival they found the man in an unresponsive state.“This commenced an investigation, what we believe to be a murder investigation,” said the spokesman.Chief Inspector Nick Pedro said officers were pursuing all avenues to locate and identify the offenders. “Obviously it is very early in the investigation at this time and we are hoping that members of the public will come forward as they have been doing in recent investigations to assist us in identifying who the suspects are.”He said anyone with information should call the independent Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477 or the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8115.
