Politicians respond to David Clarke’s murder
Premier Paula Cox has branded the recent spate of senseless shootings “an outrage to us all” for negatively affecting the Island’s mood.Ms Cox and other politicians have spoken of their shock after David Clarke was shot dead on Sunday evening at the junction of North Shore Road and Bandroom Lane in Pembroke. The 26-year-old became the fourth shooting victim of 2011.Ms Cox said she wanted to express on behalf of the people of Bermuda “our shock and sadness”.She said: “The violence, injury and loss of life that has occurred with the spate of shootings is an outrage to us all.”However what is especially troubling is how it adversely affects Bermuda overall it is not just the families who lose loved ones who are affected.“It affects the mood of the country generally our people, our economy, our future business expansion prospects. In fact it affects our democracy itself.”Ms Cox said Government would use “single-minded determination” to continue to come up with solutions on a number of levels. She said: “To address issues of crime and violence, its root causes and long-lasting solutions is both multi-pronged and long-term and has to be sustained.”The deterrent to the senseless violence will require directed efforts to provide hope and inspire confidence in addition to any contemplated legislative measures. However as a Government we will do all we can to stop the senseless violence.“Please know that we in Government are sensitive and mindful of the pain to the families who have lost loved ones and of the harm to the community, so together we have to devise the solutions and Government will lead the charge.”Ms Cox added she was confident new National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief and Junior Minister Jonathan Smith would further the progress made by former Minister David Burch.Mr Clarke’s murder happened on the edge of Mr Perinchief’s Pembroke Central constituency. He said: “All I can say is it’s very concerning. It’s deeply troubling, especially the pattern [of gun murders]. It seems every month a young man loses his life.”Mr Perinchief met yesterday with the Commissioner of Police and his senior command team to discuss it.He said: “The Commissioner and his team provided a comprehensive briefing on this tragic incident and I am satisfied that they are well engaged in the investigative process and I urge those members of the public who may have information to come forward to assist.“Violent acts such as last night’s shooting are senseless and deprive the community of deserved peace and a family of a loved one’s presence. There are no winners. My sincerest condolences are expressed to the family of the late David Clarke.”Mark Pettingill of the Bermuda Democratic Alliance said: “Government needs to have a better action plan. I’m not convinced Government is doing that.”Shadow Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley said: “Like most people in the community we were most upset and concerned to learn of yet another gun murder.“Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of the victim and also our prayers of support to those that live in the neighbourhood, who might have had a quiet Sunday night rocked by such a despicable and horrible event.“Sadly, in spite of the hard work of many in the Bermuda Police Service, we as a community should not be surprised by the continuation of the shootings as we have not significantly addressed the root cause of these problems. One must wonder when will enough really be enough?”
