Body in water sparks a murder investigation

Body found in water:Denise Evans-Wilkinson

Police are trying to piece together the last movements of murdered mum Denise Evans-Wilkinson in the hope it will lead them to her killer.Superintendent Antoine Daniels said police had launched a murder investigation as there were “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the death of the 45-year-old mother from Pembroke.Ms Evans-Wilkinson’s body was found in the water off Mill Point Road in Pembroke at about 2pm on Friday.Police are now appealing for anyone who may know of Ms Evans-Wilkinson’s last movements to contact them.Ms Evans-Wilkinson was last seen on Tuesday in the Parish of Pembroke, but she had not been reported missing to police.Mr Daniels said: “There were suspicious circumstances, it was not a natural death. The findings show that her death was aided by someone else.”The announcement that police are now treating this as a murder case means there were two murders in Bermuda over the weekend. Ms Evans-Wilkinson’s body was discovered less than 48 hours before Jason Smith was gunned down in Overview Hill, Pembroke.Forensic officers are said to have identified Ms Evans-Wilkinson “using various technological means.” There was said to be “no indication” how long she had been in the water. An overseas pathologist carried out the autopsy and concluded Ms Evans-Wilkinson’s death was suspicious.Mr Daniels said there were two possible causes of death, so further tests on the body needed to be carried out. However Mr Daniels would not elaborate on what the suspicious circumstances were or how forensics had identified the body.Mr Daniels also said it was too early to discuss possible motives. He said that no arrests had been made, but assured the public that progress was being made.Mr Daniels said: “The investigation is fresh and we have some positive leads of inquiry.“We have had some information and the feedback we have received has been pretty positive. But it usually takes a few days to get to the bottom of it all.”Ms Evans-Wilkinson was known to frequent the Pembroke area, particularly Court Street and Friswells Road. She had formerly been married, with Evans being her maiden name and Wilkinson her married name. She was said to have adult children. Her second cousin, who would not be named, said he last saw Ms Evans-Wilkinson at their great-grandmother’s funeral in March. He said she seemed her usual self.He added: “We had our ups and downs but family love couldn’t break us. I didn’t know her that well, I’m not sure what she was into.”In February this year Brian Rogers, of North Terrace, was jailed for six years for torching a man’s car because he thought he was sleeping with his partner Ms Evans Wilkinson. Rogers set fire to Maxwell Brown’s car and then painted “let her go, she is mine” across a wall outside his home. The court heard how Ms Evans-Wilkinson was a drug user and she had sought shelter with Mr Brown as Rogers had subjected her to physical abuse. The first press conference at the new Hamilton Police Station was held yesterday to formerly confirm the identification of Ms Evans-Wilkinson.Mr Daniels said Marine Police had responded to a phone call of a body floating in the water off Mill Point Road on Friday afternoon. Mariner Michael Bean found the body when he was on his way home from the Yacht Club. The body was immediately removed from the water and certified dead by a practitioner.Mr Daniels said he wanted to express his sincere condolences to the family of Ms Evans-Wilkinson.Mr Daniels added that he did not believe there was “any greater concern” to women living in Bermuda. He said: “Women should take the necessary precautions during the hours of darkness, but we do not think there is one type of person targeting women.”Ms Evans-Wilkinson’s murder investigation is being headed by Detective Inspector Michael Redfearn and Sergeant Dennis Astwood.l Anyone with any information should call the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.
