Stand Up Bermuda to rally on May 24

The anti-violence group Stand Up Bermuda plans to have a strong presence during the May 24 Bermuda Day celebrations, members say.Last night the group held its first committee meeting, according to organiser Gaynelle Hayward, to settle on its approach.“This is about bringing Bermudians together, to celebrate who we are,” Ms Hayward said. “We’re making fliers, we want T-shirts, but what we really want to see is Bermudians coming together. We don’t want to live in a sense of helplessness.”She estimated the group’s membership at well over 500, generated mainly through its Facebook site ‘Stand Up 4 Whats Rite or Fall 4 Whats Wrong’.Member Channing Seymour said: “I myself would like to take part in the May 24 parade, just to put the message out there in terms of what we are as Bermudians, instead of just harping on about guns and violence. We need to get back to the good part of ourselves.”Although the group’s formation was prompted in part by gun-related violence, Ms Seymour said: “We don’t want to make it just about banners and negative messages, especially right before a wonderful holiday.”
