29-year-old man arrested after attacks on women
Female joggers were warned to be vigilant after a weekend sex attack on a woman in broad daylight and an attempted attack on another. The two incidents took place within the space of an hour on Saturday morning. A 29-year-old man was in custody last night in connection with both.Police said the first victim was accosted by a male motorcyclist as she jogged in the area of Paynter’s Road and Harrington Sound Road in Hamilton Parish.A spokesman said: “A struggle ensued but she was able to escape and continued jogging east along Harrington Sound Road.“On reaching the area near Walsingham Lane and Harrington Sound Road a short time later, the same male accosted the female jogger again; however, this time she received assistance from a passing motorist.“The suspect escaped, but a full description of him and the motorcycle he was riding was circulated to all police patrols. The female jogger was not injured and is now assisting police with their investigations.”The woman reported the incident at 8.25am and 35 minutes later another report was received by police of a woman in distress on South Road, Smith’s parish, near Watch Hill Park.“Officers responded within minutes of receiving this report,” said the spokesman.“On arrival they located the victim who alerted them to a suspect in this case. “The male suspect was pursued on foot by police and, despite attempting to evade arrest by jumping into the ocean, he was arrested a short time later on suspicion of sexual assault.”The second victim, who was not out running, was treated at the scene for minor abrasions and later seen by the sexual assault response team. The police spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service would like to reassure the Bermuda community that they are deeply concerned by the attack on these two women and are taking these investigations extremely seriously.“We also take this opportunity to thank those members of the public that assisted the victims, which clearly demonstrates the caring nature of the majority of Bermuda’s citizens.”Donna Watson, President of Bermuda Track and Field Association, yesterday urged runners to be careful. “It’s definitely quite disturbing, especially when I look at the times,” she said. “Running at that time, you should be safe, because there are people on the road.“We are talking about nearly midmorning. I think it’s sad and I guess it speaks to what is happening in Bermuda right now.”She added: “I would hate to say to women to not run on the roads. It’s summer now and the weather is fantastic. But we have to say ‘be aware of your surroundings’.”Ms Watson suggested being extra-careful when wearing earphones and running in groups where possible. “The main thing is to be cautious,” she said. “If it’s happening twice in one day, we need to be careful.”A marked police vehicle responding to the second incident crashed on St David’s Road in St George’s. No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured but the car was extensively damaged.Detectives at Southside Police Station are appealing for witnesses to the two incidents involving the women.Anyone with information should call 293-2222 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-TIPS (8477).l Useful websites: www.bps.bm, www.btfa.bm.
