Women's personal safety workshop and tips offered following sex attack
Women are encouraged to attend a workshop on personal safety and awareness after a sex attack in broad daylight at the weekend. The Women’s Resource Centre, on Point Finger Road, is holding the session on July 18 to teach females how to protect themselves from violence.A 29-year-old man was last night still in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman at about 9am on Saturday morning on South Road in Smith’s.The victim was found in distress near Watch Hill Park. She was treated at the scene for minor abrasions and later seen by the sexual assault response team. The man arrested in connection with that incident is also being questioned about an incident involving a female jogger less than an hour before in Hamilton Parish.WRC executive director Elaine Williams said yesterday: “The minutes and hours following a sexual assault are an eternity we hope no one close to us will ever have to endure.“We have been made aware and are deeply saddened to learn of the recent incidents of sexual assault against women in our community.“It is important to be aware that the act of sexual assault does not mean that the experience is over. The trauma to the victims encompasses physical, emotional and psychological short and long-term effects.“It may dramatically alter the victim’s lifestyle and their recovery depends not only on the ability to recover but on the availability of services to assist, as in counselling, family support and employee assistance.”She praised the police response on Saturday and issued the following tips to members of the public, especially women walkers and joggers:l Try not to walk or run alone at night and, if you do, choose a busy area;l Carry your cell phone and a hand-held safety device (available at Gorham’s) in case of emergency;l Tell someone where you are going and give them an expected time of return;l Avoid running or walking with earphones;l Be aware of anyone who might be following you and don’t be afraid to make a lot of noise if necessary;l Get to a safe place as soon as possible if you are sexually assaulted. Don’t bathe, brush your teeth, douche, use the bathroom, eat, drink or change your clothes;l Call police as soon as possible if you are attacked. If you know someone who has been attacked, listen and comfort them, accompany them to the police station or hospital and tell them they are not to blame.Ms Williams encouraged women to call the centre to find out more the July 18 workshop.
