Warning over fake cheques
The Bermuda Police Service has issued a public warning following an increase in fake cashier’s and travellers’ cheques.The typical counterfeit cashier’s cheque found appears to be mailed from the UK and claims to be worth $2,750.The fake travellers’ cheques appear to be from American Express and claim to be valued at $500.A spokesman for the BPS’s Financial Crime Unit said: “It became apparent that these fraudulent cheques were in circulation after some local residents responded to a recent Internet advertisement promoting an alleged ‘work from home’ opportunity.“The local banking institutions have been made aware of this matter and they remain vigilant.”The spokesman advised members of the public to disregard the cheques as they are worthless.
