Police shut down beach party
Seven were arrested after a beach party on National Heroes Day attracted large numbers of revellers to Horseshoe Bay Beach. A licensed event, the Bermie Beer Fest was lightheartedly billed on Facebook as a free admission event “with a ‘hint’ of drinking”.Several different beer tents were on offer, but no hard liquor was served.According to organisers, about 400 people turned up for the event last year, while this year’s attracted thousands throughout the afternoon and early evening.A police spokesman said: “The police assessed the nature and size of the crowd to be a threat to public safety and they ordered the organisers to close the event early.”The large turnout also caused “severe congestion” at access roads and the Horseshoe Bay car park.Organiser Jah Simmons of Multi Entertainment said the disturbance broke out among a local crowd who were some distance away from the beer tents.Mr Simmons said “six or so people” began to fight about a half hour before ten security men were due to arrive for duty.Mr Simmons added: “It came out of nowhere. Somebody saw somebody else they didn’t like and that’s what happened. We were irritated by these incidents and we hoped it would die down, but we had to end it early.”
