Police: Be on lookout for e-mail scams

Police have warned members of the public to beware of scams seeking their personal or sensitive data via email.“Please be aware that banks or other legitimate financial institutions will never ask you for personal account information such as your password,” said a spokesman.“In addition, residents should ignore ‘official looking’ e-mails claiming to be from any local bank regarding their ‘security information.”–They also warned job seekers to be wary of fake employment ads.“With adult job seekers eager to find work and students coming home from college for summer break hoping to make some extra money, the possibility of being deceived exists,” said the spokesman.“Some of the signs of a phony employment ad are poor grammar of the ad or response e-mail, the response e-mail asking for personal information such as your social insurance number or if the response e-mail requires you to part with money.”According to the spokesman, scammers are utilising local publications and websites.“Don’t assume that just because an ad is published locally or advertised on some of the more popular Bermuda websites, that it is legitimate,” he warned.
