A Department of Parks worker has been fired at in broad daylight as he tended flower beds on one of Bermuda’s busiest roads.Three bullets were fired at the man as he worked with two colleagues in the centre of the Trimingham Hill roundabout in Paget.The worker is understood to have escaped injury because of his quick-thinking actions to run from the two gunmen on a bike.As the man was fired at from close range, he quickly leaped up to run towards and hide in nearby bushes.The pillion passenger is thought to have fired two shots as the bike approached the roundabout from Trimingham Road at about 2.20pm yesterday.Then a third bullet was fired as the worker, who is in his early 20s and from Pembroke, began to run across South Road.It is understood that all three bullets were fired less than 30 feet from the intended target.The worker managed to find safety in a garden opposite the roundabout as the bike sped off east along South Road.The shooting is understood to have happened after the two men had ridden around the roundabout to “stake out” the scene.About 15 police officers, both plain-clothed and uniformed, descended on the scene and blocked off surrounding roads as they combed the roundabout for clues.Officers could be seen with sniffer dogs and metal detectors and are understood to have found three bullet casings. Two are understood to have been found near the western South Road exit and one near the eastern South Road exit.Officers have also viewed the roundabout’s CCTV footage in the hope that the shooting was captured on camera.Workers from the Department of Parks yesterday confirmed to The Royal Gazette that their colleague was the intended target. They said the man was shaken, but otherwise uninjured and left the scene immediately.One worker, who was also working on the roundabout at the time of the shooting, said there had been several passing vehicles nearby.He said: “It all happened so quickly, it was over in seconds.“They (the gunmen) had just ridden round the roundabout earlier then they came back, they knew what they were doing.“He (the intended target) was so lucky, it’s a good job he has fast legs, they probably saved his life”.Yesterday’s shooting came just four days after a shooting near St. Monica’s Road in Pembroke. Forensic evidence suggested that a firearm had been discharged, however no one was reported being injured.Residents and business owners spoke of their shock at the shooting happening “in daylight on one of Bermuda’s most travelled roads”.One woman, who lives nearby, said: “I heard these three pops straight after one another. I thought it was a car backfiring.“But my husband has a military background and he immediately knew they were shots.”The woman added that she feared someone had been hurt, but she was too scared to look out her window to see what had happened.A nearby business owner, who did not want to be named, said: “I’m very concerned. You certainly don’t expect anything like this to happen on your doorstep.“There had been a lull in shootings, then this happens.“But this isn’t the Back of Town, it’s Paget. It just shows that it’s happening everywhere now”.Police cordoned off all roads leading to the scene of the shooting. A police car and three officers blocked the entrance to Trimingham Road at the Crow Lane roundabout, backing up traffic leaving Hamilton.The west of South Road was blocked off at Stowe Hill with motorists being directed onto Harbour Road, causing traffic to back up to the Paget traffic lights.And the east of South Road was blocked off by a police car at its junction with Point Finger Road. However, three buses were allowed to wait on South Road and passengers, including many tourists, could be seen standing in the Paget Plaza car park talking about what was going on.At about 4.30pm two workers could be seen removing the CCTV footage for police officers to view. They said they were “hoping and praying” that the footage would help the police investigation.Police are appealing for any witnesses, particularly anyone who may have seen two men on a motorbike in the vicinity around the time of the incident.Witnesses described the bike rider and his pillion passenger as dark-skinned males, wearing dark clothing and helmets with visors.Anyone with any information should contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.
