Teenager stabbed to death in Warwick

Fourteen Police and Fire Service vehicles crowd in front of the Railway Trail gate on Bulkhead Drive off Khyber Pass Road, Warwick after a teenage man was found stabbed off the Trail.

Police have launched a murder investigation after an 18-year-old was found stabbed near the Railway Trail in Warwick yesterday. The teenager was rushed to hospital, but died from his injuries yesterday afternoon. The Royal Gazette understands the young man had been stabbed, but police could yesterday neither confirm nor deny that detail, only saying that the teenager had not been shot.At around 12.40pm yesterday, police and emergency medical personnel were called to Bulkhead Drive, off Khyber Pass in Warwick, for what was initially described as an assault. However, when they arrived at the scene, Assistant Police Commissioner David Mirfield said they found the teenage victim suffering from serious injuries in the bushes off the Railway Trail.Making an official statement at the scene of the crime, Mr Mirfield said: “The man was taken to hospital and has now succumbed to his injuries. This is now, therefore, a murder investigation.“It isn’t entirely clear how the young man died and I am not at liberty to release the details of this particular person as his family are still being informed. I can confirm that we believe he was 18 years of age.“We are not sure how many people were involved, but what I would do is appeal for anyone who was in the railroad trail behind me in this area from about 12.40pm if they have seen any suspicious behaviour or activity, or any young men running away from the scene to contact the Bermuda Police Service.”Despite the proximity of the scene to where Monday’s non-fatal shooting took place, Mr Mirfield said the two incidents do not appear to be linked at this stage of the investigation. However, he did say that any links discovered between the incidents would be investigated.A fire truck and almost a dozen marked and unmarked police cars were parked yesterday near the scene as members of the Serious Crime Unit began their investigation.Yellow caution tape was hung between Bulkhead Drive and the trail where the victim was found as forensic officers combed the area for evidence.Mr Mirfield said that the teams would be investigating the area for a “considerable” amount of time, and that the Mobile Command Centre, which has been parked near the Warwick Post Office since Monday’s shooting, would remain in place and be fully manned.“A full police investigation is now underway. The SCU are investigating the matter and will be at the scene with the forensic unit for a considerable length of time,” he said.“At this time our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual, and I reiterate that we are treating this as a murder investigation.”One man, who said he has lived in the area for around 50 years, said he had no idea the incident had taken place until the police and paramedics arrived on the scene.A short while later, he said he saw the paramedics rushing the victim away.“I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Serious Crime Unit at 295-0011, or contact the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.Useful website: www.bps.bm.
