Hurt: Jaya Minors, four, suffered light injuries when she was knocked down by a car on Thursday.

The mother of a four-year-old girl knocked down in a hit-and-run accident has said her daughter has been left in fear of the road.“She’s come around a lot, but she can’t remember what happened to her,” said Jazmine Minors of Jaya Tucker, her daughter.Thursday evening’s accident, which Ms Minors said occurred on Palmetto Road near Devonshire Recreation Club, left the young mother asking: “Why?”“It’s sad, because how can you hit a four-year-old and not get out of your car?”She said the driver, who was quickly surrounded by onlookers, drove away from the scene without once leaving her vehicle.“I saw the car coming, I heard the screech, then I heard my daughter crying,” Ms Minors said, of the moment when she realised her child had disobeyed her instructions and wandered from her mother’s Long Ridge Pass property with another youngster. She counts Jaya lucky for escaping with just light injuries.“Jaya got a tissue bruise under her rib cage, and road rash on her face and arm and side.”Ms Minors’ BlackBerry message, with details on the car that allegedly struck her daughter, was circulated around the Island yesterday, appealing for help.Thanking the public for their assistance, Ms Minors added: “People need to pay attention on the road. I’m being serious seeing my child knocked down has opened my eyes.”Police last night said a 68-year-old Smith’s woman had been arrested in connection with the incident, and a vehicle has been impounded.Meanwhile, Warwick resident Devena Lightbourne issued a plea for information, after her car was left badly damaged by a motorist who drove away and for the second time this year.“It leaves me feeling like a lot of the values Bermudians have are going,” she said. “I was really shocked someone could do such a thing and not leave a note.”Yesterday the damage was totted up to around $5,600 which she and her husband Kevin will have to pay, as the car has only third party insurance.A callous driver smashed the corner of the parked vehicle and drove off, just four months after the Lightbourne’s car took $800 in damage outside their Morgan Road home.“I broke down and cried when they told me what it would cost us,” she said, adding that mechanics believe the other vehicle which left silver-grey paint behind must have sustained extensive damage in the process. The disgusted couple have asked for anyone with information to contact police, or the independent Crime Stoppers hotline.
