Governor Sir Richard Gozney is expecting a UK report on how Bermuda’s Police Service is tackling gun crime and gang violence within weeks. He plans to make the recommendations of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary [HMIC] public. An inspector from the HMIC visited in November, at the invitation of Sir Richard and with the support of the Bermuda Police Service. When he announced the visit earlier this year, Sir Richard described it as “something of a cross-check on what are the most high profile areas of police service work”.According to the HMIC website, it independently assesses police forces and policing activity ranging from neighbourhood teams to serious crime and the fight against terrorism.“In preparing our reports, we ask the questions which informed citizens would ask, and publish the answers in accessible form, using our expertise to interpret the evidence,” it states. The inspection was expected to be conducted by senior British police officer Bernard Hogan Howe, but he had to be replaced after he was appointed the new Commissioner of London’s Metropolitan Police. It has not been announced who stepped into his shoes. However, Sir Richard confirmed that the visit has now taken place, without any press announcements.“The visit by the Inspectorate of Constabulary duly took place in November. The team were here for a week but the Inspector who took the role originally planned for Mr Hogan Howe was only on Island for two or three days and had no time for anything but the essentials with the police,” he said.“I’m awaiting his report which should be available within the next few weeks. Our plan is to make public as much of the report as we can, including and especially the recommendations.”
