The Friendship Trophy Final at the National Sports Centre by the North Village Rams over Somerset Trojans on New Year’s Day may have went without a hitch, but for the West End-bound Trojans it was a police escort out of the changing room back to Sandys. It came following concerns by football officials, sparked by the presence of known gang members at the game on Sunday.Informed sources confirmed inquiries by The Royal Gazette yesterday after several motorists and residents spotted the west-bound escort after the game.Somerset Cricket Club President, Alfred Maybury confirmed he was aware of the escort back to the team’s home field. It follows the recent move by the Boulevard Blazers to pull out of the Friendship Trophy competition due to safety concerns.Mr Maybury said: “We are aware of the community concerns, and the safety of both players and patrons, and as such we have taken, and do take, every precaution to ensure the safety of all.”When pressed further, Mr Maybury said: “We have increased security measures, but I would not like to put them in the public domain at this time”.He then invited The Royal Gazette to attend the first league game of the year between the Somerset Trojans and the PHC Zebras at the Somerset Cricket Club on Friday, adding: “Come to the game and observe.”Meantime police sources confirmed that while there were no specific threats made at Sunday’s game, officials had heightened concerns at the presence of several known affiliated gang members in attendance at the National Sports Centre.
