‘It will not stop us going to Bermuda’

Governor designate George Fergusson

Governor designate George Fergusson has told how he was repeatedly punched in the face in the attack that cost him his left eye.In an interview with the UK’s Daily Telegraph, Mr Fergusson described himself as lucky the damage was not even worse following the daylight robbery in London’s Margravine Cemetery and Park last Friday.“There are still lots of things you can do with one eye — normal day-to-day things,” he said.“It will not stop us going to Bermuda. We are still thoroughly looking forward to it.”The attack happened as Mr Fergusson arrived back in London following a briefing with West Midlands police.“I was coming back to have dinner with friends and was going from Barons Court tube station to their house, which was nearby,” he said.“I was running slightly late and I was walking through the park looking at my mobile to check their address when a man appeared in front of me demanding my phone.”“He followed up with a punch to the eye and I could feel something pretty bad had happened.“I fell and he held me down. I was conscious. He punched me a couple of other times as he demanded my wallet, took about £50 and then he left. He did not take my phone.“I was able to gather my stuff and knew that Charing Cross hospital was about 400 yards away. I dialled 999 for the police and I then set off to the hospital.”He continued: “It seemed unreal. It was all over very quickly. He hit me with a very powerful punch, which disorientated me.“It was very clear from the first punch that my eye had been severely injured. I have lost the sight in my left eye.”The unidentified mugger failed to take the phone and later escaped, leaving Mr Fergusson dazed and bleeding profusely from a serious eye wound. His wife Margaret Fergusson told the Telegraph: “He has been extremely resilient and incapable of doing anything but looking at adversity in the eye with good humour.”Mr Fergusson is due to take over from Sir Richard Gozney next month.Police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of robbery in relation to the incident on Sunday night. Police say they are satisfied robbery was the only motive.
