Machete robbery victim: ‘I never thought it would come to this’
A brazen armed robbery outside her own home has left a 50-year old Sandys woman, her son and a friend traumatised and fearing for their lives. The robbery happened shortly after midnight on Saturday on Benny’s Bay Road, just off Spring Benny Road. The victim, who asked not to be named, had just driven into her yard with a female friend to meet her son when they were rushed by two masked men wielding machetes.Speaking to The Royal Gazette last night, she broke down in tears still shaken by the ordeal. “It’s horrifying and just plain frightening,” she said.“It makes me feel like nobody is safe not even in their own yard anymore.” Her son was standing outside the car when the incident occurred.“I didn’t realise what was really happening until I saw my son empty his pockets that’s when I realised we were being robbed,” she said.“I laid on my horn to get somebody’s attention but nobody ever came out, it all happened so fast, I feel totally violated and very hurt.”Her 23-year old son said: ”They pushed the tips of the machetes up in my chest and told me to empty my pockets so I threw my wallet, cellphone and keys on the ground,” he said.“My mom’s friend started confronting them while my mom laid on the horn, one of the guys pushed his machete in through the window and told my mom to stop her noise.“He said ‘give me all your valuables’. By this time the other man had broke the left rear window.”The passenger, a Southampton resident, said she tried to shield herself with her gym bag when they tried to “bash in” her window. The car’s engine was still running, she took hold the wheel, put the car in gear and screamed to hit the gas. “The car went forward, when we put it back in reverse one [of the men] jumped out of the way while the other was still trying to break the car windows,” she said“To say I feared for my life would be an understatement, these boys should be ashamed of themselves. I could tell from their demeanour that they were young, their voices sounded young,” she said. The son agreed and said he could tell they were disguising their voices. “They kept talking in a low pitch, like they were trying to switch up their normal voices,” he said.“I just kept trying hard to remain calm but I was nervous at the same time. One of them had his hand up ready to chop me when the car came hurling back at them.“What’s killing me now is they’re violating you in you own space, it’s very crazy to do that in your own yard — attacking innocent people and that. I’m hurt and mad that, even after they got the wallet, they still wanted to hurt us and do more damage. The passenger said: “There is no fear in these guys and I believe they really wanted to hurt us,” she said. While the mother is still “really shaken up” about it.She said: “I would have never thought it would come to this. I feel threatened. I’ve lived in the White Hill area all my life. I’ve lived here in this house for 15 years. I’m feeling at a loss and I don’t understand why they wanted to hurt us so bad.”The car which belongs her son was extensively damaged. He was just grateful that no one was hurt, he said he just got the car on New Year’s Eve. The passenger is upset that two men would target innocent women.“I want to know what they’re thinking to do something so cowardly, I wonder if they think of their own mothers or grandmothers,” she said. The mother expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of support and words of comfort” from the many people who have been in contact since the attack. The suspects made off on foot with a wallet containing personal items with no cash in it and a BlackBerry cell phone. Both men had scarves tied around their faces wearing dark coloured clothing at the time of the incident.Police attended the reported incident around 12.45am on Saturday. In a statement yesterday, police described on of the suspects as six feet tall, wearing a grey hooded top with dark coloured jeans. The other stands five feet five inches tall and was wearing a black jacket and dark coloured jeans.Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Benny’s Bay Road area just off Spring Benny Road between midnight and 12.45am to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation at 234-1010 as the investigation continues.
