Govt unveils publicity campaign to combat gangs

Television advertisements are due to run encouraging young people to show respect to one another and to the wider community.Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief unveiled the ads yesterday. They form part of a broader Ministry strategy to combat gangs and discourage young people from joining them.Mr Perinchief said the TV campaign follows a special Youth News supplement in The Royal Gazette last week on the themes of respect, gang intervention and suppression. The first ad in the series — which is accompanied by the Aretha Franklin song ‘Respect’ — shows a group of young men helping an elderly lady across the road. The second shows young men on a football pitch behaving courteously to one another despite playing on rival teams. The third depicts a young man offering to help a mother lift her child’s pushchair up some steps.Mr Perinchief said the ads, particularly the one showing footballers “will reach a certain core group,” and he believes they will be effective.“The aim of the campaign is to use local images, everyday scenarios and real people demonstrating common courtesy and respect in various means,” he explained.“As basic as the concept of respect is, it bears repeating and reminding.“As we go about our everyday lives we should remember those fundamental life lessons that make for positive interaction, one with another.“Perhaps more importantly, as we impart our values to younger people, respect must form part of that wisdom.“We emphasise in this campaign respect for the community and the environment.“We promote respect and friendly rivalry in sport. This campaign reminds us to respect our seniors and to lend a helping hand to each other.”He said that on the topic of gang mediation, an announcement will be made in the House of Assembly today about “a group coming down from Boston”.He encouraged members of the public to look out for the TV ads and the further announcement today.
