Suspect released, another man arrested as London police probe robbery of new Governor
Police investigating the London mugging that left Bermuda’s Governor blind in one eye have released one man from the inquiry and arrested another.George Fergusson, 56, was assaulted and robbed of $50 in broad daylight in Margravine Cemetery and Park in Hammersmith on April 20.Mr Fergusson made his own way to New Charing Cross Hospital, and was later transferred to the Western Eye Hospital, but it was too late to save the sight in his left eye.Giving an update on the investigation yesterday, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police in London said a 29-year-old man who was arrested on April 22 on suspicion of robbery has been released from the inquiry with no further action. He revealed that a 31-year-old was arrested on May 14, also on suspicion of robbery. He has been bailed to return to a west London police station in early July, pending further investigations. The spokesman said police are continuing to appeal for information in the case. They have released CCTV pictures of the suspect, who is described as black, believed to be aged in his 20s or 30s, and around 5ft 10in. He wore a dark-hooded top and dark glasses.Responding to the update on the case, Mr Fergusson told The Royal Gazette: “I am grateful to the police for the effort they are putting into this investigation.“I hope that whoever my assailant was can be tried and convicted — the person who did the attack is clearly very violent and the public and his own acquaintances would be safer if he can be caught.”
